With this campaign, Azeitona Verde intends to create awareness to the fact that intensively farmed olive groves that have been recently introduced are gradually replacing the traditional olive species with species that are geared for intense farming. Traditional olive species and traditional farming methods that are part of cultural heritage are being replaced with industrial and intensive techniques while stressing the soil through overuse of herbicides and pesticides. One of the olive trees we want to protect is the Galega. This is a typical Portuguese species which has been replaced by other non-national and more profitable varieties mainly because it is considered not to be as effective, presenting a more laborious harvest and harder to propagate by grafting. It is, therefore, a priority to maintain local varieties.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is therefore a priority to maintain local varieties<\/h6>\n

Present times call for further vigilance due to the danger of the disease caused by the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa<\/em> spreading throughout Italy, Spain and northern Portugal. It mostly attacks older trees, having already destroyed thousands of centuries-old millennial specimens. The fear that the disease will spread to other regions in Europe, including Portugal, is becoming a real threat, mainly because it is believed that one of the reasons for this disease is the introduction of varieties from other countries.<\/p>\n

Our ideia<\/h3>\n

At Azeitona Verde we want to help protect our cultural habits and traditions that centre around our olive oil and help promote biodiversity through the protection of traditional species, in our case \u2018Galega\u2019 and \u2018Cordovil\u2019 species. Although our societies do not seem to cope without intensive farming techniques we must endeavour to protect and value local and small producers of traditional produce that still value traditional practices and crafts. Therefore, we created an idea in a relaxed and fun tone, but with a strong message:<\/p>\n
