How to make natural crowns just using plants and plant derivatives
The designer
In a search for a profession linked to aesthetics, such as the art of beauty, Diana Bastos studied Fashion Design. She worked in fashion and lifestyle for over a decade and was a fashion editor for Máxima magazine. Although her main area of production during these years was fashion, in fact, decoration, lifestyle and plants had always been her passion. And true to her passion she moved on to study Floral Design and Herbalism.
Her “true to nature” approach of working with plants in a very simple way makes her creations seem to have been created by nature itself. Her work stands out and has captivated well-known patrons such as MAAT, Caudalie, Observer Lifestyle, Claus Porto, Sisley Paris, Magic Quiver, amongst others, for whom aesthetics is always associated with ethics, patrons who have always aligned their values to carry on creating with sustainability.
Eira
This newly acquired knowledge gave her the courage to launch Eira, a “botanical concepts” studio that works with sustainable flowers and plants produced on her farm or bought locally with which she creates pieces and original concept events.
Erva Moura
She also uses nature and natural rituals at Erva Moura, a creative studio and online store linked to well-being rituals and natural events.
Bringing nature into the house is important and should be part of everyone’s daily life.
How to make natural crowns just using plants and plant derivatives
by botanical designer Diana Bastos
Step by step
The base of the crown is made with vine branches or other climbing plants, such as wisteria that have malleable branches. Ideally use a single, very long branch, make several turns and braid the branch to form a large ring. If necessary, secure the first loops with raffia.
For the filling, you can choose different sizes and colors of leaves, fruits, berries, and/or flowers. The idea is to create harmonious contrasts, recreating the differences of nature. For this crown, it was used mostly branches of trees that exist in Azeitona Verde such as olive, some with olives, holm oak, pomegranate, hawthorn, for the orange berries) , grape leaves and lagurus ovatus.
Materials
Branches to build the base
Differents types of branches
Berries, olives or small fruits
Dry leaves or flowers
Pruning scissors
Natural raffia
The branches are attached to the base by attaching between the base braid or using small pieces of raffia.
Gradually overlap the various species you have chosen, until you fill 2/4 of the crown, and to create an asymmetrical effect, place more branches from where you started in the opposite direction, filling 1/4 of the crown.
At the end, you can add more notes of small berries, loose leaves with contrasting colors or dried flowers. To attach the crown to the wall, make a small wire loop and attach to the crown.
