Agriculture that devastates forests, enslaved populations, child labor, famine, disease, and for the sake of profit even animals are no longer spared! The keyword is information. We need to be adequately informed before buying that beautifully packaged, scented and appetizing product, advocating health and beauty wonders launched by marketing campaigns or by ‘commissioned’ articles, stemming from inconclusive or non-existent studies. It is a mistake to think that buying these products is a way of helping poorer countries. The ones making a real profit are the firms – they take over the land, pay miserable wages and endanger the natural habitat and sustainability. Powerful multinationals with no respect for the rules established by “Fair Trade” have succeeded in turning coconut oil into a fashionable product. This is rapidly dethroning traditional products, destroying regional biodiversity and bringing about negative consequences for the country’s economy. The expansion of coconut plantations in Asia has led to the use of baby monkeys chained to treetops for fruit picking under unacceptable conditions.
